Repair work to fix damaged caused by me - Calif Apt Rental?
You can ask for an itemized bill, but expect most of that charge to be labor costs. You had no rights to hire your own repair people, unless you asked the landlord for permission to do so, and he agreed. The property belongs to the landlord, and he has exclusive rights to determine who does repairs and who does not. Rarely will a landlord allow tenants to hire their own workers, since the landlord then has no control over the final quality of the repair work. You are being asked to leave because you caused a fire in your unit. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the bath area. It MIGHT have burned the entire building to the ground. The landlord no longer trusts you to take proper care within the unit, since you have already caused one fire.
