Is it possible to change a lease?

If two people signed a lease together, and one wants to leave before the lease is up... are there any options/alternatives to change the lease agreement or end the person's responsibility to pay the rest of the lease agreement? Are there any options in this situation other than being stuck with the person you signed a lease with?
